Design and engineering, end to end.
Product work runs across a lot of stages — strategy, design, the implementation, keeping it maintained. I run across the whole range instead of stopping at the edge of a job title. Full-Stack Design Engineer is the short name for it: full stack in both directions.
Started as dev, always designed.
I started as a web developer, focussed on design at agencies along the way, and finally landed in SaaS, where I've worked as a product designer ever since.
Though, the code never left. It stayed in the work the whole time, and lately it's come back as a formal part of the week: design-system engineering, an AI context layer and MCP tooling, fixes shipped straight into the apps. Trying to pick a side just routed the long way back to doing both — which is also where the field is heading.
Mostly the work runs end to end — shaping strategy and requirements, running research, building next to engineering, then reading how it performs once it's live. Web apps and native mobile alike.
A few things stay constant. Design decisions hold up better made next to the code that implements them, so that's where I work. Reusable systems beat bespoke screens. AI is part of the daily method now, not a marketing line. And a fair amount of it is quality nobody assigned — polish that never shows up as a ticket.
The work is most useful where design and engineering aren't kept in separate lanes.
